Male Greensnout Parrotfish and Japanese Parrotfish use their skin cells to subtly move beyond beauty and change their colours underwater, but light also plays a role through the effects of diffraction, scattering and interference. The Greensnout appears with purple scale ends and dark blue at other times, while the Japanese will display a pastel purple head through to dark brown.
