I am a self-taught glass artist using lampwork and enamel (powdered glass) techniques to produce intricate and unique jewellery. The two pieces submitted use the cloisonne method. Cloisonné involves applying enamel to sections on metal objects separated by fine wire. I create compartments (cloisons) on the metal using thin silver wire, which I fill with different coloured enamels. After multiple firings to melt the enamel on the metal and then polishing, the finished piece exhibits intricate designs and striking colours. Making cloisonne jewellery requires skill and precision as the wires need to be precisely shaped and applied. I also use my chemistry training to control the chemical reactions that produce the vibrant colours.
