Entries Open: Plein Air Challenge at the 2026 Whitsundays Writers Festival

Updated: 2 days ago

Creative Connections Whitsunday members are invited to take part in a new Plein Air Challenge, held as part of the Whitsundays Writers Festival's free Stories by the Sea community event on Sunday 13 September 2026.

Artists will create an original work on location at the Whitsunday Marine Club, capturing the atmosphere of the day and the surrounding coastal landscape. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch the artworks develop throughout the challenge before viewing the completed works later that afternoon.

The finished artworks will be displayed throughout the afternoon, giving festival visitors the opportunity to see the completed works and vote for their favourite. The People’s Choice Award will be announced at 4.00pm as part of the festival’s closing celebrations.

The artworks will also be offered through a silent auction, with 100% of sales going directly to the participating artists.

Whitsundays Writers Festival Director Richard Evans said the challenge reflects the festival's commitment to celebrating creativity in all its forms.

"Stories aren't told only through words. Artists capture the places, people and moments that shape our communities just as powerfully. The Plein Air Challenge brings another creative dimension to the festival and invites visitors to experience the Whitsundays through fresh eyes."

Creative Connections Whitsundays President Glenda Brown said the event was a wonderful opportunity for artists to paint alongside one another while engaging with the wider community.

"Plein air painting is about responding to a place in the moment. Whether you're an experienced artist or relatively new to painting outdoors, it's a rewarding challenge that encourages observation, creativity and connection. We're delighted to partner with the Whitsundays Writers Festival to bring visual arts into this year's celebrations."

The Plein Air Challenge forms part of Stories by the Sea, a free community event featuring more than 20 regional authors, book sales and swaps, children's activities, live music, open mic readings, and a gold coin BBQ and refreshments.

Artists of all experience levels are encouraged to enter, and places are limited.
