The Doors Are Open – and What a Night It Was

More than 200 people joined us on Thursday evening to celebrate the official opening of the Creative Connections Whitsunday Community Gallery and what an incredible night it was.

For many of us, the evening was the culmination of years of dreaming, planning, fundraising, volunteering, painting, cleaning, organising, and believing that our region deserved a dedicated community art gallery.

To finally stand in a gallery filled with people, conversation, laughter and art was something very special.

The Gallery was packed from the moment guests arrived. Families explored the exhibition together, artists shared stories behind their work, children lined up for face painting and the painting activity, and every room buzzed with excitement and connection.

As darkness fell, fairy lights began to glow throughout the gallery and gardens, transforming the space into a warm and welcoming evening setting. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as guests gathered among the artworks, enjoying the chance to linger, chat, meet the artists and celebrate the opening together. Local food vans Mika and Sweet Wheels provided a delicious menu for the night, while musician, Helen Blackshaw added to the energy of the occasion with live music that helped make the evening feel festive and full of life.

It was everything we had hoped for.

A Community Achievement

We were honoured to welcome Mayor Ry Collins and Whitsunday Regional Councillors Deputy Mayor John Finlay, Cr Jan Clifford OAM, Cr Clay Bauman and Cr John Collins to the event.

Mayor Collins officially opened the Gallery and cut the ribbon, describing the project as an example of what can be achieved when passionate locals come together with a vision and a willingness to make it happen.

His words resonated strongly with everyone in attendance because this Gallery has truly been a community effort from the beginning.

What was once the former Visitor Information Centre has been transformed into a vibrant creative space that belongs to the whole community.

The opening night was a celebration not only of a building, but of the volunteers, artists, supporters, sponsors and community members who helped bring it to life.

Art at the Heart of the Gallery

The opening exhibition brings together the work of 26 local artists and features well over 100 individual artworks throughout the gallery. Visitors will find a wide mix of creative work, including paintings, glass art, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, handmade pieces and smaller gift items. Alongside the artwork, visitors also discovered a range of unique artist-made merchandise, providing another opportunity to support local creatives.

The display has been thoughtfully arranged to make the most of the gallery space. The works range from colourful coastal and reef-inspired pieces to landscapes, abstract paintings, wildlife, botanical themes and contemporary designs. Each section gives a glimpse into the creativity of local Whitsunday artists and the diversity of art being made in our region.

Visitors commented on the quality and variety of the exhibition, with many taking their time to explore every corner of the Gallery and meet the artists behind the work.

Guests were invited to vote for their favourite artwork in the People's Choice Award, proudly sponsored by Bendigo Community Bank Cannonvale-Proserpine. We look forward to announcing the winner soon.

Looking Ahead

Opening night also gave us the opportunity to share some exciting news about the Gallery's future.

Creative Connections Whitsunday has recently secured funding through the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), which will help us enclose and soundproof the verandah, creating a dedicated weatherproof space for workshops, events and community activities.

We are also delighted to announce that we have received Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) support for a mural project that will transform the front of the building and create an even more vibrant presence in the heart of Proserpine.

These projects are important steps towards our vision of creating a thriving creative hub for the Whitsundays.

Thank You

There are so many people to thank.

To our exhibiting artists, volunteers, sponsors, supporters, community partners and everyone who attended, thank you for believing in this project and helping us reach this milestone.

The comments we heard throughout the evening were overwhelmingly positive. Many visitors told us they were excited to see a dedicated arts space in the Whitsundays and were already looking forward to returning.

That enthusiasm reminds us why this project matters.

The official opening may now be behind us, but in many ways this is only the beginning.

The doors are open, the Gallery is alive with creativity, and we can't wait to see what comes next.
