When it comes to sharing your art with the world—whether through competitions, exhibitions, or simply for your own records— good photography matters. A well-captured image can make the difference between your artwork being overlooked or truly appreciated. After all, judges, curators, and even future buyers may first experience your work through a photograph rather than in person.

Why Good Photography Matters
Competitions & Exhibitions: Many calls for entry are judged initially from digital submissions. Poor lighting, bad angles, or shadows can diminish the impact of even your best work.
Your Records: Documenting your work professionally creates a portfolio you can share confidently. It also ensures you have a lasting record of your creative journey.
Marketing & Sales: Whether on social media, your website, or in print, strong images showcase the true quality of your artwork and help you connect with your audience.
Tips for Photographing Your Artwork
Use Natural, Even Light: Indirect daylight near a window works best. Avoid harsh sunlight that creates glare or heavy shadows.
Keep It Straight: Position the camera directly in front of the artwork and check that all edges are square. A tripod can help keep things level.
Simplify the Background: Use a neutral backdrop so the focus stays on your art, and crop the photo to the edges of the piece.
Check the Details: Make sure colours are true to life and adjust for straightness and clarity.
Use What You Have: A modern smartphone, when paired with good lighting and setup, can produce excellent results.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Taking Photos at an Angle: This distorts proportions and misrepresents the work.
Poor Lighting: Yellow, dim, or uneven light will alter the colours and flatten the artwork.
Distracting Backgrounds: Household clutter or patterned surfaces take attention away from your art.
Not Editing: Simple adjustments like cropping and straightening can dramatically improve presentation.
